The group of Ecological Systems Design (ESD) was established in January 2006. Together with the previous Institute of Hydromechanics and Water Management, a new institute was founded: the Institute of Environmental Engineering. The new Institute had the aim of broadening the research from initially mainly water-related activities to environmental engineering in general. The ESD group was part of this strategy, adding the research field of environmental assessment tools and industrial ecology to the research portfolio of the institute.
In the first 10 years of its existence, the ESD group has graduated 15 PhD students, and more than 100 students wrote their Master or Bachelor theses in the group. Most of our former PhD students and PostDoctoral researchers are still at an early career stage, but two of them already obtained professorship positions (Bernhard Steubing, Francesca Verones) and several others obtain leading positions in academia and industry.
In the teaching, the ESD group has been in charge of the Major “Ecological Systems Design and Waste Management” until 2016. With the reorganization of the Master program within the Environmental Engineering Curriculum, it will coordinate the Module “Ecological Systems Design” and “Waste Management” within the Master program as of 2016. The Group also holds several mandatory courses in the Bachelor program of Environmental Engineering and participates in lectures of other study programs at ETH Zurich.
